24th February 2006On Friday 24th, at the climax of National Pubs Week, the branch presented its award for Pub of the Year 2005 to the Mason's Arms, Quarry School Place, Headington Quarry (map). The Mason's is a smashing local, with strong committment to real ale (running a very successful annual beer festival and operating a micro-brewery on site), and this is the second year running that the pub has won the branch award. Our congratulations to Chris Meeson, his family, and all the staff and regulars who make the Mason's such a success. Our thanks for their hospitality on Friday.
We would also like to extend our congratulations to Meeko Oates, licensee of the Shoulder of Mutton (map), Wantage, winner of the Pub of the Year award by our CAMRA neighbours, the Vale of the White Horse Branch. The pub used to be a Greene King tenancy, but GK sold the pub on to a pub group last year after Meeko waged a vigourous campaign against the wholesale prices that tenants are charged for beer. Meeko couldn't resist a humorous parting shot in GK's direction, in celebration of his award:
